ProCut(Pop's Knife Supply) - New addition to the steels specifically developed for knives. And once again, Larrin was involved, collaborating with Joey Berry of Pop's Knife Supply. Development started in March 2024. The inspiration being to develop an evolution or the next version of the well known and popular DIN 80CrV2 steel. As Joey described 80CrV3. There's a really interesting and detailed article on Larrin's knifesteelnerds.com site if you'd like to learn a great deal more about this steel. In a nutshell, base was the DIN 80CrV2 steel and then the thought train involved the lack of Nickel steels in knife making industry, which has rather few specimens, as Larrin said "15N20, L6, and 8670 are pretty much it". The result is Pop's ProCut. In the end it's closer relative of the Bohler-Uddeholm 15N20 steel than the 80CrV2 steel, but unlike 15N20 steel Pop's ProCut has Vanadium(V) and Wolfram(W) neither of which is present in 15N20, and higher Carbon content compared to 15N20 steel as well. Overall, as far as I understand, this is quite versatile steel, with wide range of working hardness, 60-64 HRC. Depending on the intended use it can be in more heavy duty or high performance cutters. Wear resistance is quite high. In CATRA tests Pop's ProCut outperforms well known and popular knife steels like AISI 52100, CruForgV, AISI O1, DIN 80CrV2. Considering the alloy composition, it isn't as wear resistant as Hitachi Aogami Super or Wolfram Special(Another steel developed by Larrin), but considering its increased toughness that's a tradeoff worth considering for many types of knives. The other advantage is the ease of use, which is a major plus for the knife maker. One more advantage is that given its nickel content, Pop's ProCut is a good candidate for the use in Damascus knives. Provides nice contrast, and provides considerably better wear resistance increase compared to AISI L6 or 15N20 steel in Damascus. I am not sure who exactly makes it, but I suppose steel mill isn't the most relevant. I'll provide updates as I get them.
