9260(AISI) - Shock resistant spring steel. In a nutshell, 9260 is the good old AISI 1060 spring steel with added Silicone(Si), whole ~2% of it. That makes 9260 much more shock resistant and tougher than AISI 1060 steel. Therefore, 9260 becomes a better choice for large, hard use blades, and indeed, it is a popular choice for sword making. According to the into I got, 9260 is widely used in production katanas. Can't say I've seen knives made out of it, but that absolutely doesn't mean there are none. 9260 is used in lawn mower blades, which is a very tough use for any blade. Based on the maker's feedback, there are better and worse than 9260 choices for the swords, but all in all, 9260 is a very decent sword steel and by extension, it will do well for large, heavy duty blades as well. I wouldn't expect high levels of edge retention from 9260, but I guess it depends on the requirements, Plenty of people are happy with AISI 1060 steel performance and 9260 can do better than that.
